The Two Lumberjacks

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abraham Lincoln

Work Smarter, Not Harder

It was the annual lumberjack competition and the final was between an older, experienced lumberjack and a younger, stronger lumberjack. The rule of the competition was quite simply who could fell the most trees in a day was the winner.

The younger lumberjack was full of enthusiasm and went off into the wood and set to work straight away. He worked all through the day without stopping, cutting down tree after tree. At regular intervals throughout the day, the noise of trees being felled coming from the other part of the forest would stop. The younger lumberjack took heart from this, knowing the older lumberjack was taking a rest, whereas he could use his superior youth and endurance to win. The younger man smiled to himself, and he pressed on even harder.

The time for the competition came to a close. To the younger lumberjack’s surprise, the older man had felled far more trees than him and had won. The younger lumberjack was incredulous! Swallowing his pride, he approached the man and asked him for the secret. “Every hour,” the old lumberjack said, “I took a break to sharpen my ax.”

The ability to view responsibility as a series of short sprints rather than one long marathon is paramount.

In life we can become so busy with our family, work, and adulting in general that we forget to take time out to relax, spend quality time with our loved ones, and recharge spiritually and mentally so that we can come back renewed and sharper!

We get frustrated by life and our inability to cope, but instead of developing ourselves and taking the time to become more effective, we keep struggling with a blunt ax. Don’t do it anymore. Stop, sharpen your ax, and become more effective.

In a world of relentless productivity and unfettered determination, you have to know how to recharge.

At Urban Body we affirm the stress put on you by daily life. We offer you a sanctuary.
