“A body in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.” This law in physics also applies to our nervous systems, as well. A majority of us are good at getting things done. However, it’s much harder to come to a complete stop. Massage is the reset button.
Our bodies require a full cycle of charge -> discharge. Leaving ourselves charged with the responsibilities of the day results in our short-circuiting. This leads to chronic stress, fatigue, and unwarranted pain. There are a number of complications arising in a variation from baseline, our original source of emotional and physical homeostasis.
There is an advantage to your nervous system anticipating the same routine every day. It’s harder to train yourself through on/off cycles because the nervous system prefers to stay primed for efficiency. This keeps us in an ever increasing spiral of pressure and performance.
Practices like yoga, meditation, and massage train us to complete the difficult transition of on to off, and that’s how they’re considered therapeutic. Massage goes deeper than sleep and nutrition to address your whole nervous system directly, including brain change.
